Land Sales

The subsidiaries of Norfolk Southern Corporation own or control parcels of land in 22 states, the District of Columbia, and Ontario, Canada. If there is a specific parcel(s) that you are interested in purchasing and you have determined that Norfolk Southern owns it, please contact the appropriate Real Estate representative as shown on the System Map on the website. The Real Estate representative will then determine if the parcel is available for sale and will contact you for further discussion.

Abandoned Track Right of Way

If you own land adjacent to the NS right of way where the main track has been removed and you wish to acquire NS' interest in that right of way, NS will require the following:

1. A copy of the deed or deeds to your property that adjoins the abandoned track right of way. We customarily limit NS conveyance of abandoned track rights of way to the adjoining landowners.
2. A county tax map (preferably full size) showing the property in which you are interested, and at least 1/2 mile of property on each side. Please clearly identify your property on the tax map. Please also mark that portion of our property that is the subject of your inquiry.
3. If possible, provide a distance from your property to the railroad, such as from a railroad milepost marker, railroad bridge, or public road crossing along the right of way.
4. Provide any print, plat, survey, or other information that may help identify the location of the property.
5. Provide specific directions (including street names and landmarks) from the closest interstate or highway to the exact location of the property.
6. A non-refundable application fee of $500 will apply. Whether the property is available and your cost will depend on NS investment in the right of way and how Norfolk Southern holds title.
7. Following our receipt of your application, materials and application fee, title to the property will be reviewed. At a later date, you will be contacted with further instructions to conclude the transaction.
